Postgraduate and Mature Students
November 6th, 2009Hello and welcome to the postgrad and mature section of Manchester Uni’s LGBT society website.
We’re Jennie and Robin your postgrad/mature reps on committee, and we’re here to organise and run events for postgrad and mature LGBT students, represent your views on the committee and be friendly faces if you want to go to any events, or just fancy a chat.
You can contact us at either: jennie.b.ohara@gmail.com or robin.macdonald@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk
The LGBT Society
This year we plan to have weekly lunches around the university campus (dates and times of these lunches will be publicised via the LGBT Postgrad/mature student facebook group and also via the weekly email) These lunches are a great opportunity to meet and socialise with other postgrad and mature students. We’ll also be having a few evening events so keep checking the facebook group and weekly emails for further information. There are lots of interesting events for postgraduates (such as Queer Studies research seminars) which are already going on around University and we’ll be publicising these throughout the year. Please get in touch with us if you have any suggestions for postgrad and mature student events!
University structures for representation
The University has academic representation structures in place for postgraduate and mature students starting with the Union’s Executive – namely Chris Jenkinson (Postgrad and Mature Students Officer) who you can contact at postgrad@umsu.manchester.ac.uk, and Kate Little (Academic Affairs Officer) academic@umsu.manchester.ac.uk
Your school will also have course reps – contact your course director for details of who these will be.
Union Council has two LGBT secretaries – Emma Kerry and Jonty Pryor – both of whom can be contacted at welfare@umsu.manchester.ac.uk.
Of course, you can chat to Robin and Jennie (your reps on LGBT committee) too: jennie.b.ohara@gmail.com and robin.macdonald@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk
Childcare/caring responsibilities
The Students’ Union will pay £5 per hour to help with the cost of childcare to enable you to attend Union events. To do this, you need to collect a form from the Students Union and have it signed by a committee member and a member of the Union’s executive.
For more information about how to access this service, contact Hazel Kent – the Union’s Women’s Officer at womens@umsu.manchester.ac.uk or 0161 275 2939.
