Ethnic Minorities
March 19th, 2009Ethnic Minorities
“A minority or subordinate group is a sociological group that does not constitute a politically dominant voting majority of the total population of a given society. The term “minority group” often occurs alongside a discourse of civil rights and collective rights which gained prominence in the 20th century. Members of minority groups are prone to different treatment in the countries and societies in which they live. This discrimination may be directly based on an individual’s perceived membership of a minority group, without consideration of that individual’s personal achievement. It may also occur indirectly, due to social structures that are not equally accessible to all.”
In short, we’re basically a minority within a minority and it is sometimes easy to forget that there are cultural and religious barriers for us in another country and as LGBT people.
Black and Minority Ethnic Students’ Rep
The University of Manchester has its very own Black and Minority Ethnic student rep. To sum up, those who self define as being either black or ethnic minority as well as an LGBT person you have your very own person to chat, moan or if you like, stare at. The only way I can help represent you is if you tell me, so give me a shout.
The 2008/9 rep is Eyo Essien, if you need to contact him:
